BOOKS:

The Yellow Book

<img src="i433.photobucket.com" border="0" width"600" alt="beardsley Pictures, Images and Photos"/>

Wikipedia: "The Yellow Book, published in London from 1894 to 1897 by Elkin Mathews and John Lane, later by John Lane alone, and edited by the American Henry Harland, was a quarterly literary periodical (priced at 5s.) that lent its name to the "Yellow" 1890s.

It was a leading journal of the British 1890s; to some degree associated with Aestheticism and Decadence, the magazine contained a wide range of literary and artistic genres, poetry, short stories, essays, book illustrations, portraits, and reproductions of paintings. Aubrey Beardsley was its first art editor, and he has been credited with the idea of the yellow cover, with its association with French fiction of the period. He obtained works by such artists as Charles Conder, William Rothenstein, John Singer Sargent, Walter Sickert, and Philip Wilson Steer. "

All 13 volumes are available to download from www.archive.org in either djvu or pdf formats. Wikipedia has direct links.

Also on archive.org: The later work of Aubrey Beardsley

Hallucinogenic chocolates doom Berlin sweet shop

BERLIN (Reuters) - Police closed down a Berlin sweet shop after discovering the owner was selling chocolates and lollipops laced with hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana.

The 23-year old owner of the shop in the trendy east Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg, an area known for its vibrant night life, was taken into custody on suspicion of drug-dealing.

"In the shop we found 120 pieces of magic mushroom chocolate and countless cannabis lollipops," said police, who confiscated around 70 sachets containing various drugs, about 20 marijuana joints, a range of pills and some jars of drug-laced honey.

Police said one customer, who appeared intoxicated, was arrested after trying to buy a bag of hallucinogenic mushrooms from an officer in the shop.

Testing Our Lively Room

Yes, we have also entered that new 3D-world Google set up. You will find it in the first comment for this story. Right now it only works with Explorer or Firefox on a PC and you need a Google-Acount to log in and download the installer. Whatever....

It doesn't look very pretty yet, but the interesing thing is that you can integrate this into any website and chat with people ho are on the same page. You don'thave to start an extra-program like Second Life. It's all happening wihin the browser.

Metropolis on DVD

From the Digital Bits We've just heard back from our friends over at Kino International. The good news is that they have officially confirmed that the newly-discovered footage from Fritz Lang's original version of Metropolis (which we mentioned yesterday) WILL be a part of the forthcoming special edition Blu-ray Disc release in 2009. What's more, the new special edition will be released on standard DVD format as well on the same day. Watch for more details on this sure-to-be-amazing release in the weeks and months ahead. We think that's just about the best news we could close out the week with, don't you?
