Christmas

Dear regulars and newcomers,

surprisingly as every year, you might have noticed that annual celebration called x-mas is approaching, and fast.

Around the bookshop the fact raises certain questions:

Do members and ever so warmly welcomed guest want to party and thus escape the family craze?

Would you be interested in extending the usual Friday meal into a x-mas party or rather prefer an aditional one on Sunday, 24. Dec.?

Please let us know before 21.December!

Call Alan or Kim or Stefan at the bookshop or just come in and tell the person behind the counter.

Looking forward to seeing you all, enjoy the season in how ever way you like...

Updates

The "How to"-section has been updated with info about how to embed youtube-videos etc.

The bookshop in the reviews collects old and new reviews about "Another Country".

When you "create a story", you will find the HTML-code for a standard-link on the bottom of the editor-window. It's more convenient than having to copy it from somewhere else.

Stories include topics and backlinks now. Backlinks a re a way of finding out that some else is linking to your story. Like greatsfandf.com linking to an old entry about R. A Lafferty on top of their list of blogs.

New link to list all topics and search individual topics. If you add a new topic, it will automatically be listed to the list. Please use capital letters for new topics.

Tuesdays Filmclub

December's first Tuesday already past, we had a special Scorsese treat that received mixed reviews by the audience present...ask questions at the bookshop and you will be told various perceptions by various people...as for me: I kind of liked it - great cast, that caters for girls of all generations, very good acting, interesting camera work here and there, and a good story, interesting enough to bear the access 20 minutes length, good dialogues and enough hints to recognize Scorsese's comments on US society and the media in particular.

As to the program for the rest of the month, we have a wish list for the weeks coming up: Australian girl suggested A Heart in Winter The Australian boy stated interest in The Handmaids Tale There was also expressed interest in Leaving Las Vegas The Lottery and Robert Altman's - may he rest in filmmaker's heaven -Thieves Like Us.

Tonight one of my favourite german culture magazines, Kulturzeit, daily on 3sat at 19.20h recommended a jazz movie, that I've put on my personal movies to watch list instantly - check out The Saddest Music in the World made in 2003 starring Isabella Rosselina as a beer baroness: "If you're sad, and like beer, I'm your lady."

No more comment on this from me today guys...see everyone tomorrow - the man is back, and in good spirits, we hear...so long, everybody over the meal, or later on...

Sale of spanking tool points up larger issue

By Patricia Wen, Globe Staff | January 10, 2005

ARLINGTON -- On a spring day, Susan Lawrence was flipping through a magazine, Home School Digest, when she came across an advertisement that took her breath away. In it, ''The Rod," a $5 flexible whipping stick, was described as the ''ideal tool for child training."

''Spoons are for cooking, belts are for holding up pants, hands are for loving, and rods are for chastening," read the advertisement she saw nearly two years ago for the 22-inch nylon rod. It also cited a biblical passage, which instructs parents not to spare the ''rod of correction." Read the Whole Article Here... www.boston.com

Friday

"Jesus Camp" is a very scary movie! Very, very, very scary!!!!! But you have to see it because it's the best documentary 2006. Watch the trailer!

Scary, eh? see, I told you!

Please read this story at Alternet: "The star of the film is Pastor Becky Fischer, who explains the startling mission of her "Kids on Fire" camp: "I want young people to be as committed to laying down their lives for the Gospel as they are in Pakistan." At the camp, the children are asked: "How many of you want to be those who will give up your life for Jesus?" Little hands shoot up from every direction. They are told: "We have to break the power of the enemy over the government." At one point, Becky yells: "This means war! Are you a part of it or not?" More little hands."
